THE Shade!

Assalam u ‘alaikum,
Bismillah.

The hadith that I am sharing in this post is one of my favorites. It is one of those narrations that whenever you read them you get a good taste in your mouth and you want to act upon it somehow, immediately. It tells about seven categories of people who will get shade by Allah on the Day of Judgement.

I wanted to discuss each of the seven points but they are so beautiful and clear and complete that there is no point in explaining them further. The only thing I want to say is, imagine the Day when there will be no shade! Sun would be very very near us. There will be no trees, no shelter, no nothing! The Day would be 50,000 years long! It will be sweltering hot and everyone will be thirsty beyond imagination and so worried and alone. Read a bit about how that Day would be like in the post “Only Imagine” and then read this post further so that you can actually feel what a great blessing and relief it would be to get a shade on that Day! We do want to be from at least one of these seven people, don’t we?

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, The Book of Adhaan, Hadith no. 660:

Narrated Abu Hurairah r.a: The Prophet s.a.w said, “Allah will give shade to seven, on the Day when there will be no shade but His. (These seven persons are:)

1. a just ruler,

2. a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah (i.e. worships Allah Alone sincerely from his childhood),

3. a man whose heart is attached to the mosques [i.e. who offers the five compulsory congregational Salaat (prayers) in the mosques],

4. two persons who love each other only for Allaah’s sake and they meet and part in Allaah’s cause only,

5. a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allaah,

6. a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity), and

7. a person who remembers Allaah in seclusion and his eyes become flooded with tears.”

O Allah, the Merciful and Ever Loving! Please make us one of these and help us act on these points.

Wassalam,
Hajrah. :)

  1. Wa alaikum assalam. I heard a live lecture by Mugheera the other day named “Heat and the Hadith of Shadow” and I have a few things I’d like to share. Might be helpful, insha Allah.

    1. A just ruler = Here ruler does not specifically mean the ruler of a country. In fact, this can be anyone who has some authority and if he does justice in that he would be included in this category insha Allah.

    2. //a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah (i.e. worships Allah Alone sincerely from his childhood), //
This is also interpreted as a person who spends his Youth in the worship of Allah. Related to this is the Hadith which says that a person won’t be able to move on the day of judgement until he has been questioned about 5 things. And one of those questions would be how did he spend his youth?
Everyone turns to Allah when they reach 60,70,80 and know that they have little time left. But when we are young we have a lot of energy and it is very hard to control your desires. And if in that condition a person is still spending his time worshipping Allah, then that would earn him this honour on the day of judgement insha Allah.

    3. //a man whose heart is attached to the mosques [i.e. who offers the five compulsory congregational Salaat (prayers) in the mosques],//
Scholars say in explanation to this that the person is eagerly waiting for the next prayer and his ears are readily waiting to listen to the Adhaan being called, and as soon as he hears it, he runs to the Mosque and he WAITS for the Salah.
A related Hadith is that the Prophet PBUH said that a person who cleans the house of Allah because he loves the house of Allah, let it be known that he is a Momin.
    SubhanAllah!

  2. 4. //two persons who love each other only for Allaah’s sake and they meet and part in Allaah’s cause only//
Well this is pretty clear but about this he gave a tip that if you want to REALLY know if a person loves you for the sake of Allah or not, then work on a project with him in which you’re doing something for the sake of Allah.
It’s very normal that sooner or later you’ll disagree on something and have an argument! Now if he leaves the project hanging because you guys argued, then he doesn’t love you for the sake of Allah. Otherwise he would stick around even if you guys disagreed and still help completing whatever you are doing because he’s doing it for Allah’s sake!

    5. //a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allaah,//
About this he said that people usually say that I can’t be in this category as no girl would ever ask me such a thing. But Allah’s mercy is widespread! Let go of your girlfriends! Put an end to all those haram relations and tell her that you can’t talk to her because you fear Allah and insha Allah Allah will count you in this category!

    6. //a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity),//

It is in our nature to show off so doing this is very hard. We just somehow find a way to show off like saying “Brother you know I gave charity but the Prophet PBUH has said that give charity such that your right hand does not know what your left hand has given so I didn’t tell anyone brother.” And the other person is like MASHA ALLAH. -__-

    7. //a person who remembers Allaah in seclusion and his eyes become flooded with tears.//
Today our hearts are like stones. People who don’t cry by the fear of Allah, even when they hear the words of Allah, their hearts are like stones. But Allah guides whom He wills and He is the one who can make stones cut apart and makes rivers gush forth!

The Salaf said (or it’s the view of the scholars don’t remember exactly) that we SHOULD cry when we are alone by remembering Allah or by listening to his words. And if someone cannot cry, AT LEAST HE SHOULD PRETEND that he’s crying! SubhanAllah this is how important it is to change our states that we are in today!

Sorry for the long comments :/ But I thought I should share this since it was still in my head!!
