Have you ever had this experience that you knew a thing all along but actually felt it for the first time? Yes? Well, that is the real knowing!
This is the verse that I actually felt the other day. My faith got stamped on it. This is the verse:إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى ٱللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ ٱلْعُلَمَـٰٓؤُا۟
“Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.” [Fatir:28]
Heard and read this loads of times but actually felt and implemented on it only recently. So I actually felt (i.e. really got to know) that knowledge is the first thing. Saying or acting upon it comes second. Obviously, if you don’t know how can you act upon it? So, just keep knowing!
Allah says in the Qur’an,فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ
“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah” [Muhammad:19]
Allah did not say, “Say, that there is no deity except Allah” because knowing it in the true sense will cause you to believe on it fully and thus say it without difficulty and consequently act upon it happily. (Yes, La ilaha illa Allah has to be acted upon).
When you read and understand the Qur’an and try to act upon it, you think you are knowledgeable. But when you read the Hadith, you’re shocked. You know so little. Often in various situations, we are all confused about what to do and we might think our religion does not provide a solution to that. But it does! It’s just that we don’t know. Hadith has extensive knowledge stored in it about all the situations and aspects of a person’s life.
Know! And then argue about stuff or pass judgements. Know about Islam from its real sources in detail and then decide for yourself.
We Muslims idealize the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and think wow they just did it all, we can never do it. But the secret is that they knew. And so they acted upon it. Of course, if they didn’t know how else would have knowledge passed down to us?
But the point I want to establish is slightly different than just knowing. Because you might be thinking already “we know it, it’s just that we can’t implement it.” Well, the reason to that is that knowing is not enough. You need to know in the proper environment with a proper method. Which means be a student! Always! Never stop being a student. Because even if you knew a thing once, you tend to forget the feel of that knowing. So for that you need reminders in a proper student-ly environment.
Plan ahead! Devise ways in which you can be a student of the Qur’an and Hadith for your whole life. And make du’a for it. Didn’t our pious predecessors travel miles and miles all their lives just to get knowledge? They remained students until they died. It must be important then!
P.S. This post has been inspired by The Book of Knowledge in Sahih Bukhari. :D
P.P.S. If you’ve never been a student of the Qur’an and Hadith then you don’t even know what the real stuff is. Enroll yourself somewhere, soon. Even if online.
