The person in the third category is like the man who completely neglected his land and wasted the water; so his land became a desolate waste. Thus, he is utterly reprehensible and an object of regret.

These were the examples of people of alertness, people of treachery and people of heedlessness.

The first category is that of the watchful, cautious people who are attentive to their duties and conscientiously try to fulfill the purpose of their creation. The second category is that of people who betrayed their God-given trusts. The third category is that of people of heedlessness.

As for the first, whether he moves or is still, stands or sits, eats or drinks, sleeps or wakes, wears clothes, speaks or is silent, all of these actions will be recorded for him, not against him for he is in a state of remembrance, obedience and nearness to Allah, and is constantly being enriched spiritually. And the second, when he does the above-mentioned actions they are recorded against him, not for him, for he is in the state of aloofness from Allah and in a state of loss. As for the third, he lives his life in a state of heedlessness, idleness and negligence.

Secrets Of Salah – 6

The most hateful in creation in the sight of Allah is the idle wastrel who is neither profitably occupied in worldly pursuits, nor in gaining the hereafter. In fact, he is a burden upon the world and religion, for when a person strives for dunya, and neglects his aakihira he is reprehensible and a failure. So what of one who neglects both? And a man who perpetually strives for his dunya and neglects his aakhira is most definitely a loser.

The person in the first category is like a man who was allotted a vast area of land for the purpose of farming. He was given all that he needed for cultivating and watering the crops. Thus, he cultivated the land and prepared it for farming. He sowed all manner of grains, and he planted all manner of trees and brightly colored fruits. Then he surrounded the land with a high wall and did not neglect its safety. In fact, he posted guards to protect it from corruption and mischief makers. He began tending it every day; putting right its deficiencies, replanting what had dried up, clearing its shrubbery, and clipping its thorns and using the produce for its cultivation.

The person in the second category is like the one who acquired that land and made it a shelter for wild beasts and reptiles etc, and a place for filth and carrion and a stronghold for every evil mischief maker and thief. He abused all the facilities he had been given for the cultivation of that land, by allowing mischief makers to flourish therein.

People are divided into three categories:

  1. One who uses his limbs for the purpose for which they were created; this is the one who traded with Allah to utmost advantage, and he sold his soul to Allah for maximum profit. Salat was devised to dedicate man’s body to worship, thus obeying the dictates of his heart and his natural instincts. This is a man who has recognized the blessings of Allah, the spiritual and physical faculties that he was endowed with, and all the favors bestowed upon him. Thus, he upheld the duties of slave hood, inwardly and outwardly, used his limbs in Allah’s obedience, and protected his soul and his body from what would anger his Lord and deprive him of His nearness.
  2. One who uses his limbs for other than the purpose for which they were created. He employs them in sin and disobedience. Such is one whose efforts are wasted, his trade has failed, and he has lost the pleasure of His Lord and His bounties. Instead he has earned Allah’s anger, and his punishment will be most painful.
  3. One who wastes his physical faculties and deadens them by idleness and ignorance. He is a greater loser and an even a bigger failure than the second category. For man has been created for worship and obedience, and not for idleness.

Secrets Of Salah – 4

For the heart is like a tree whose greenery and fruits and moisture depend upon water; if it is deprived of water then the roots wither, the branches waste away and the fruits cease. Then even if you were to do your utmost to tend to the tree it will not grow. In fact the branches will snap. At that point, the owner of the garden may well decide to cut off the tree and make it fuel for the fire. Similarly, the heart that is devoid of Allah’s oneness, love, knowledge, remembrance and invocation is afflicted by a spiritual fever and the raging fire of worldly lusts and desires. Thus, the branches are prevented from expanding and the tree is fit for nothing but the fire.

So we betide those whose hearts are hardened to the remembrance of Allah, such are in clear error. (39:22)
However, once the heart is saturated with the rain of divine mercy, the branches become soft and moist. When you bend them to Allah’s command, they will be tame and malleable. The branches will bloom and flower and you can pluck whichever of the fruits of devotion you wish from those branches. But when the heart dries up, the tree no longer produces good deeds, for the spiritual growth of the heart and its spiritual life has been terminated. For each limb bears its fruit of devotion, and each limb has its own specific devotion and required obedience for which purpose it was created.

Secrets Of Salah – 3

Drought and famine repeatedly attack the heart and soul; therefore Allah renews the invitation to His banquet for His slave time and time again, five times a day as His special mercy. Each time the slave stands before his master appealing for divine kindness, his thirst is quenched by the one who sends spiritual rain for the hearts and clouds bearing the rain, so that the vegetation of Imaan does not wither and the fruits of goodness do not waste away, and so the heart may constantly be watered and nurtured by the rain of Divine Mercy.

The drought of the heart is heedlessness, and as long as the slave is in a state of remembering Allah and advancing towards Him, the rain of divine mercy falls upon him in gentle succession like continuous rain drops. But if he becomes heedless, his heart is afflicted with famine, in proportion to the extent of his heedlessness. Were heedlessness to become part of his nature, his heart would become like a dry barren desert, and the wild fire of worldly desires and lusts would wreak havoc in that desert, raging from all directions like a hot wind.  And his land would become barren, though it had been fertile once, with all kinds of fruits and vegetations. Yet if the rain of Divine mercy were to fall upon it, it could once again bloom, and flower and revert to its original state of beauty and lush greenery.

Since Allah tests His slave with desires and temptations, outward and inward, His infinite mercy and generosity also decrees that a beautiful, rich, and colorful banquet be prepared for His slave, comprising all kinds of delicacies, in addition to robes of honor and exquisite gifts. He invites all to this banquet five times daily, and He places in each delicacy of that magnificent banquet an individual taste, benefit, and dignity which cannot be found in any other delicacy. So the slave, who has been invited to this banquet, may fully savor the delight of each delicacy of that banquet of devotion and Allah may honor him in every conceivable way.

Each stage of this deed of worship cleanses the slave of impurities, confers upon him a distinctive radiance. For salat is an illumination and a source of spiritual strength in the heart and body that enhances his rizq, and instills love in the hearts of people for him. And the angels rejoice at his salat, as does the earth itself, the mountains, trees and streams. Moreover, this salat will be the means of bestowing upon the slave a special radiance and a reward on the Day of Judgment.

As for the fortunate guest who attends this banquet, his hunger is assuaged and his thirst is quenched, as he is embraced by Divine Acceptance, and spiritually enriched. Though before he came to this banquet he was suffering from hunger and intense thirst, spiritual famine and drought, nakedness and sickness, but after his salat he emerges enriched by spiritual food and drink, rich robes and priceless gems.

Secrets Of Salah – 1

Salam,
Bismillah.

Salat is the coolness of the heart of true lovers of Allah, the soul’s ecstasy of true believers, the garden of worshippers, the heart’s delight of devout believers, the touchstone of the states of the truthful and the gauge of the followers of the spiritual path. And this is Allah’s Mercy and Guidance for His believing slaves.

Allah guided them to it through His prophet Muhammad (salallahu alayhi wasalam), the Truthful, the Trustworthy, as a great honor and mercy, so they may attain dignity and success by drawing near to Him, and not because of any need He has for their worship. Rather, it is a special bounty from Him and a favor He confers upon them, whereby their hearts and limbs can devote themselves to the worship of Allah. The heart which is illuminated with the knowledge of Allah derives the greatest benefit from salat, namely, drawing close to Allah and experiencing the incredible sweetness of His nearness and love. It experiences the delight of standing before Him, bowing before Him, till the glorious climax of salat, when the slave falls to the ground in the posture which pleases his Lord; thus fulfilling the rights of worship both outwardly and inwardly.
